BASF-Nornickel in talks on raw material supplies for battery production

Russian mining company Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel) has started exclusive negotiations with German chemicals firm BASF to cooperate in the supply of raw materials for future lithium-ion battery production in Europe.

Under the terms of a memorandum of understanding signed by the firms, which was announced on 27 June, BASF intends to invest up to €400 million ($456.6 million) “in a first step” to supply European battery cell producers for electric vehicles with regionally-manufactured cathode materials.

Largest energy storage rollout for Canada

Powin Energy, a US energy storage solutions provider, will partner with renewable energy company Hecate Energy to build and install six units with a total capacity of 12.8MW/52.8MWh at two sites in Ontario, Canada.

Powin’s modular Stack140, a 140kW lithium-ion battery array that is scalable from 125kW to multiple megawatts for outdoor installation, will be deployed in the systems in Stratford and Kitchener.

Space: the final frontier for batteries

US battery manufacturer EnerSys will supply lithium-ion cells and batteries valued at over $60 million to multiple space agencies and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) worldwide. 

Quallion LLC, an EnerSys subsidiary, will manufacture the lithium-ion raw materials and 72Ah large format battery cells at its production facilities in California.

Doubts over Fisker’s ‘game-changing’ batteries for new EV

The famous car designer, Henrik Fisker (pictured), who will launch an electric car with a claimed range of 400 miles this summer, has set up his own battery-making company, Fisker Nanotech.

Danish-born Fisker, who designed the Aston Martin V8 Vantage and DB9, and the BMW Z8, originally said his new EV, the EMotion, would feature “game-changing” battery technology that marries a graphene supercapacitor and a lithium-ion battery for nine-minute fast charging capability.

The fast-growing telecom sector in India has become Panasonic’s major growth driver for energy storage products in the country, company officials say.

The Japanese tech giant reports the sector has generated more than $100 million in sales of lithium-ion battery-based solutions in the last three years, as telecom service operators invest in renewable energy plus storage.

New plants and partner for AKASOL

German battery manufacturer AKASOL is partnering with Norwegian company ZEM to develop lithium-ion batteries for maritime use, one month after its announcement of a large-scale expansion of its production capacities.

The first joint product, AKAZEM 15 OEM, is a self-contained modular battery unit designed for workboats, fishing boats and small passenger ferries.

US, Korea firms work together on Li-ion tech

US lithium-ion technology firm BioSolar has signed a joint development agreement with Li-ion battery manufacturer Top Battery from South Korea. The two companies plan to integrate their technologies to assess, develop and manufacture lithium products.

This agreement follows BioSolar’s announcement that it had successfully completed the laboratory phase of its silicon alloy nanocomposite anode material development with data suggesting it can achieve higher capacity with lowered costs.

Younicos shines in Texas

German-American technology firm Younicos plans to deliver a megawatt-scale battery storage system using Samsung SDI’s lithium-ion products to power the city of Austin, Texas.

The agreement between Younicos and Texas-based utility Austin Energy is part of a US Department of Energy (DOE)-funded initiative known as the SHINES (Sustainable and Holistic Integration of Energy Storage and Solar PV) project.

India’s EV carmakers to set up battery factories?

The Indian government is considering incentivising domestic carmakers to set up their own lithium-ion battery plants in the country. The idea is to lower the cost of electric vehicles in India and make local cars more competitive.

It’s part of India’s plans to push the sales and production of electric vehicles in the country through schemes such as FAME-India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (hybrid &) Electric vehicles in India).

Thailand to become major Li-ion player?

Thai renewable energy company Energy Absolute is planning to develop a lithium-ion battery plant to rival Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada, Bloomberg reports.

The factory, worth approximately $2.9 billion, will be built in one of four possible locations in Asia. Amorn Sapthaweekul (pictured), the company’s deputy chief executive officer, has said the company “would prefer to have the plant in Thailand” but without “clear government policy” they were also considering three other sites in Asia.
