Sony’s lithium-ion batteries are being used by a Hawaiian energy storage systems start-up Blue Planet Energy.

Blue Planet Energy’s self-contained energy storage package “Blue Ion” uses olivine-based phosphate cathodes rather than conventional lithium cobalt oxide along with its proprietary architecture and software.

Tesla signs five-year partnership deal with Li-ion pioneer

Tesla is set to enter into a five-year research partnership with lithium-ion battery pioneer, Dr. Jeff Dahn from Canada’s Dalhousie University.

The electric vehicle and energy storage system company signed the agreement with the university which focuses on advanced materials and clean technology research.

New laboratory to focus on new generation materials for Li-ion

Specialty chemicals and advanced materials company Arkema and utilities firm Hydro-Quebec are set to create a joint laboratory to research and develop lithium-ion in the energy storage sector.

French firm Arkema and Canada’s Hydro-Quebec, through its subsidiary SCE France, will focus on a new generation of materials for the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries.

Duke Energy to upgrade Pb-A project to Li-ion

US utilities firm Duke Energy Renewables is upgrading the nation’s biggest utility scale lead-acid battery to provide Texas with fast response frequency regulation.

Using images combined with data analysis algorithms the teams explored the mechanical properties of LNMO spinel (composed of lithium, nickel, manganese and oxygen atoms) at the nanoscale level.
