Battery materials manufacturer to idle portions of its US lithium production

Battery materials firm Albemarle is due to idle portions of its lithium mine and production facility in the US due to short-term supply-demand imbalances and an excess stockpile of battery-grade lithium.

The North Carolina-headquartered firm’s Silver Peak lithium mine in Nevada and Kings Mountain lithium hydroxide production facility in North Carolina are due to partially close next month until the end of the year.

Toyota invests in lithium producer Orocobre

Japanese car giant Toyota has confirmed plans to acquire a 15% stake in Australian-based lithium mining company Orocobre with an estimated investment of AUD292 million ($229m).

The move will help secure stable supplies of a key mineral for future electric vehicle batteries to meet anticipated market demand, Toyota said.

Investors boost UK lithium mine plans

UK start-up Cornish Lithium has raised GBP1 million ($1.2m) from three international investors to kick-start moves towards drilling for lithium in Cornwall.

The company said its “initial focus” will be to collate a digital log of “all relevant data on lithium occurrences in Cornwall” before applying for drilling permits.

Czech tussle over “strategic” lithium mining

The government of the Czech Republic is said to be in talks about a possible “public-private” deal for lithium mining in the country with foreign-owned domestic mining firm Geomet.

The announcement came as political leaders questioned the granting of exploration rights at the country’s “strategic” Cinovec lithium deposit.
