Mitsui invests in bus battery leasing scheme

Wed, 04/17/2019 - 13:49 -- John Shepherd

A US$200 million credit facility to support a battery-leasing programme for electric buses in North America has been launched by Japanese chemicals company Mitsui & Co and automotive firm Proterra.

The companies said the initiative is expected to lower the upfront costs of zero-emission buses and make Proterra’s electric buses “roughly the same price as a diesel bus”.

California-based Proterra said bus operators can purchase a vehicle and lease its battery packs— based on lithium-ion technology co-developed with South Korea’s LG Chem— over the 12-year lifetime of the bus.

Mitsui inks battery metals supply deal with Sigma

Wed, 04/10/2019 - 13:54 -- Hugh Finzel

Japanese chemicals company Mitsui is to pre-pay Sigma Lithium US$30 million under a strategic alliance agreement for the supply of battery-grade lithium concentrate.

Sigma will supply Mitsui with “up to 55,000 tonnes” of material annually for six years, with an option to extend for a further five years.

Sigma said the agreement provided for a significant portion of the funding required for capital expenditures and construction of Sigma’s commercial production plant at its Grota do Cirilo lithium project in Brazil.
