Manufacturers and users of battery storage systems have backed an industry-led initiative in the US to “prioritise safety” in the production and operation of equipment.

The move came amidst on going concerns about the risk of fires from lithium batteries and cells— and just days before an explosion at a grid-scale battery storage facility in the US.

Nissan selling batteries unit to China’s Envision

Shanghai-based energy group Envision has agreed a deal to become the majority owner of Nissan’s international lithium-ion batteries business.

The definitive agreement with Envision comes just two months after Nissan’s proposed sale of the business to Chinese private equity firm GSR Capital fell through.

Germany turns on ‘Europe’s biggest BESS’

A 48-megawatt BESS claimed to be Europe’s biggest battery storage facility has been switched on in Germany.

NEC Energy Solutions supplied the lithium-ion facility in Jardelund, in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, for energy services firm EnspireMe— a joint venture of Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation and Dutch power company Eneco.

Japanese sell battery businesses to China

Nissan has sold its battery business to GSR Capital, a Chinese private equity firm.

Nissan said it will first take full control of the Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC), by acquiring the rest of 49% shares from NEC, to pave the way for the GSR deal.

Nissan in talks to sell EV battery unit

Nissan is considering the sale of its majority stake in the rechargeable battery unit joint venture it has set up in China with NEC.

The Japanese carmaker has reportedly been seeking a buyer for its share of Automotive Energy Supply Corp (AESC) since last year, as it may be cheaper to buy batteries for its Leaf electric cars from other suppliers.
