UK lithium-ion gigafactory developer Britishvolt inks MoU with Welsh government

Wed, 07/22/2020 - 11:09 -- Paul Crompton

The UK’s first lithium-ion gigafactory has moved a step closer to reality with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between manufacturer Britishvolt and the Welsh government.

It is the first time a location has been officially announced for the firm’s planned 30GWh gigafactory, which will produce lithium-ion cylindrical and pouch cells primarily to the electric vehicle market.

Australian university hits 1Ah milestone on path to commercialising lithium-metal cells

Tue, 03/10/2020 - 11:32 -- Paul Crompton

Scientists from Australia’s Deakin University have developed an electrolyte that boosts the performance capabilities of a prototype lithium-metal cell.

The team from the university’s Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) has created a 1Ah lithium metal pouch cell prototype using ionic liquid electrolytes.

Tesla patents ‘secret sauce’ additive but will ‘million mile’ lithium-ion cell reach commercialisation?

Thu, 10/03/2019 - 15:01 -- Paul Crompton

US electric vehicle OEM Tesla's latest patent suggests it has solved the failure issues of high operating temperatures and voltages in lithium-ion technology to make a battery that will last a ‘million miles’.

Tesla’s lead battery researcher Jeff Dahn and members of the Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science in Dalhousie University suggest their lithium-ion pouch cells have a 6,000 cycle life, or 20 years in grid energy storage applications.

Chris Hale, from Upgradetech Engineers, told BEST: “Until I can hold in my hand a commercially produced cell capable of several thousand cycles, I will always remain sceptical."
