US scientists develop cheap, environmentally friendly redox flow battery

Scientists from the University of Southern California claim to have built a redox flow battery based on low-cost and readily available materials.

The key innovation involves using different fluids: an iron sulfate solution anD Anthraquinone disulfonic acid (AQDS), an organic material already used in some redox flow batteries for its stability, solubility and energy storage potential.

US lab team ‘develops new compound for redox flow batteries’

Research published by scientists in the US indicates an organic molecule used in dyes and antibiotics “may be the key to less expensive, more efficient redox flow batteries”.

The scientists at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) team have developed a “highly reversible, water soluble material based on phenazine”— that could serve as an alternative to vanadium used in grid-scale batteries.

Glow in the dark liquid lights up flow battery potential

Scientists at the University at Buffalo believe they have discovered a way of making redox flow batteries outshine other energy storage chemistries.

The US-based researchers identified a dye called BODIPY (boron-dipyrromethene) as a more efficient material for storing energy in rechargeable, liquid-based batteries.
