Auto partners commit to battery-tech investments as chief is sacked

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has pledged to continue its activities including development of next-generation batteries following the sacking of the alliance’s chief.

Carlos Ghosn (pictured) was removed as chairman of Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan after his arrest in Japan over allegations of misconduct.

Last month, the alliance’s investment arm said it was stepping up its investment in fast-charge battery technology research.

International automotive partnership Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance Ventures is stepping up its investment in fast-charge battery technology research.

The partners’ investment arm, Alliance Ventures, said it has invested in a round of funding for the Enevate Corporation— a Californian advanced lithium-ion battery tech developer.

Enevate’s “silicon-dominant lithium-ion HD-Energy Technology features extreme fast-charging capabilities with high energy density and improved safety”, Alliance Ventures said.

CATL clinches EV battery deal with Renault

Chinese lithium battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) is to supply batteries for Renault’s Kangoo ZE electric vehicle range, BBB has confirmed.

And Renault’s EV “alliance” partner, Nissan, has told BBB it will also use Chinese-made batteries for its first mass-produced Sylphy Zero Emission EVfor China— although it declined to name the supplier.

Renault sets up energy service subsidiary

French car giant Renault has launched a new subsidiary to invest in the development of secondary use of electric vehicle batteries (EV) for stationary energy storage and smart charging networks.

The new division, Renault Energy Services (RES), said it will research “vehicle-to-grid interaction to expand electric mobility and develop smart grids”.

Renault EV batteries to drive PV rollout

Used batteries from Renault’s electric vehicles (EVs) are to be given a second life in UK-based Powervault’s home energy storage units.  

The deal with the carmaker will reduce the cost of a Powervault smart battery unit by 30%, helping Powervault to bring home energy storage “to the tipping point of mass-market rollout in the UK”.
