PyroPhobic Systems, a Canadian maker of fire-resistant thermoplastic resins and components for the battery and construction safety markets, said it is to supply General Motors’ Ultium battery platform.
Its LithiumPrevent 200 material has intumescent properties, i.e. it expands to create a barrier, reducing the propagation of fire. It is injection moulded into electric vehicle battery pack components and mitigates thermal runaway.
PyroPhobic Systems and General Motors engineering personnel have over two years tested the material and certified it for safety and compliance. The deal will run until 2030 and replacees traditional glass-filled plastic battery components. PyroPhobic claims LithiumPrevent 200 offers superior fire resistance capabilities.
