Flow Batteries Europe (FBE) has praised the UK’s Cap and Floor Scheme for Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) and the momentum it is creating for flow battery deployment.
Invinity Energy Systems has announced that nine UK developers selected its ENDURIUM vanadium flow batteries as part of their LDES Cap and Floor bid applications. Each project proposal is at or above 400MWh, showcasing growing confidence in non-lithium energy storage and validating the scheme’s effectiveness in attracting investment.
The organisation has called this a major win for the flow battery sector. The Cap and Floor framework offers crucial revenue certainty – enabling confident scaling by developers and manufacturers – while supporting grid reliability, clean energy growth, and job creation. With long lifespans and robust safety, flow batteries are well suited for the UK’s long-duration storage needs and are being recognised as such by the scheme.
The adoption of flow batteries in multiple bids demonstrates the effectiveness of Cap and Floor-style models in promoting grid flexibility and industrial progress.
FBE states this is further proof that Europe must implement its own Cap and Floor framework to bolster a strong, sovereign LDES industry. Without it, the region risks lagging behind amid rising energy curtailment costs. The UK incurred £402m in such costs between 2020–2021, largely from renewables, but the new mechanism is helping reduce these losses – offering a compelling case for replication in the EU.
FBE continues to urge EU policymakers to take swift action in introducing a reliable revenue model for long-duration storage technologies like flow batteries.
Jonathan Marren, chief executive officer at Invinity, said, “We are delighted with the positive feedback that we have received from our partners, with significant quantities of our UK made vanadium flow batteries being proposed for this important scheme as a result. Should these bids be successful, we believe the build out of our ENDURIUM batteries across the country will not only help to lower energy costs for consumers but also help to provide wider economic benefits across the UK as we scale our operations.”
