Energy storage developer Anesco said it is on track to “quadruple its operational battery portfolio” in the UK by 2020.
Anesco said UK demand for battery storage is expected to see the firm add 380 megawatts of new capacity over the next three years.
Chinese lithium-ion battery giant BYD is Anesco’s current supplier. But an Anesco spokesperson told BBB it remains “technology agnostic”— and is “always keeping fully aware of latest technology”.
Several UK projects currently under construction include a 50MW BESS installation in Hampshire due for completion later this year.
Anesco said it is responsible for 22% of the total UK operational battery capacity to date (385MW) and responsible for 47% of the UK’s total non-enhanced frequency response (EFR) battery capacity (185MW).
Anesco powered up the UK’s first utility scale unit in September 2014 and currently has 29 operational sites— comprising 76 individual battery units— with a combined capacity of 87MW.
Executive chairman Steve Shine said: “We have long recognised the potential and importance of battery storage for the UK’s energy mix and have invested heavily in making sure it is a commercially viable option for investors and commercial organisations alike.”
Earlier this year, Anesco installed two 1,200kWh lithium-ion BESS units for low head river hydropower projects in the UK.
