China’s BYD and German energy storage firm Fenecon have teamed up to work on several large-scale battery storage projects in the latter’s home nation.
In a statement, Bavaria-based Fenecon said the projects will be similar to BYD’s recently opened 40MWh battery storage in Shenzhen, China, which is currently the biggest in the world.
Fenecon is distributing BYD’s residential lithium-ion energy storage systems in Germany and sees a huge potential of large-scale storage in the country.
The biggest storage park in Germany was opened in September by Younicos and Wemag in Schwerin. The lithium-ion battery storage has a capacity of 5MWh. A 6.5MWh battery storage park will be opened in Feldheim next year.
“There is no well-established energy lobby in China that tries to keep energy storage at bay with the allegation that it will be only needed in 20 years. On the contrary, relevant business areas of the future are recognised and the foundation for it is laid out there,” said Fenecon managing director Franz-Josef Feilmeier.
The storage at BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen has as much battery capacity as all residential home storages in Germany put together, added Feilmeier.
