Call2Recycle, the US non-profit consumer battery stewardship collection program – in partnership with the Outdoor Power Institute, the Power Tool Institute and the manufacturers Chevron, Husqvarna, Makita, Stanley Black and Decker, STIHL, Techtronic Industries and Torro Company – have announced a strategic recycling programme to create a responsible infrastructure for high-energy battery recycling.
High-energy batteries are those exceeding 300 watt hours that power products such as lawn mowers, snowblowers, irrigation systems etc. The program will provide consumers with convenient end-of-life solutions as industry transitions from gas-powered to more battery-powered equipment.
The program’s reach and effectiveness is enhanced by having major industry manufacturers sign up to this. Eligible and enrolled retailers will receive safety training and recycling materials. Consumers will return their end-of-life high-energy batteries to participating collection sites where they will be assessed, shipped and processed for proper recycling. This provides consumers with convenient end-of-life solutions for their batteries and the satisfaction of knowing that they contribute to environmental stewardship.
Creating an industry standard approach has many benefits, including the re-use of valuable minerals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel contained in the batteries which will reduce reliance on imported mined products and reduce waste.
Call to recycles CEO Leo Raudys said: “Call2Recycle applauds the collaboration and commitment of our partners, whose dedication to safety and environmental stewardship is paving the way for a circular future.”
