Chinese LiFePO4 firm signs recycling deal

Chinese telecoms infrastructure firm China Tower is to give a new lease of life to used batteries from Shenzhen-based LiFePO4 battery maker OptimumNano under a deal between the companies.

OptimumNano, which produces LiFePO4 batteries for a range of applications include electric vehicles, telecoms and energy storage systems, said the agreement would see it supply cascades of batteries to be “regenerated” in a variety of applications by China Tower.

Both sides will work to “revitalise energy storage and the re-use of batteries in power cascades to promote the development of China's green energy storage”, OptimumNano said.

The agreement was signed during a seminar on a batteries recycling seminar hosted by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance in Beijing earlier this month.

OptimumNano said the deal paves the way for the two firms to create a model for reusing automotive batteries for the Chinese market.

In a related move, OptimumNano confirmed it would also work with two of China’s other big Li-Ion battery industry players—Contemporary Amperex Technology and BYD— “to standardise the usage of cascade batteries and the evaluation of residual battery value”.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said the initiatives would help accelerate the introduction of interim measures to encourage and develop battery recycling in the country.
