Daimler AG has begun deliveries of its scalable lithium-ion energy storage systems for domestic applications.
The lithium-ion batteries are being manufactured by Daimler subsidiary Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE, using Li-Tec cells.
Originally developed for automotive applications, the Mercedes-Benz energy storage units will see up to eight 2.5 kWh battery modules combined to produce an energy storage unit with a capacity of up to 20 kWh.
The energy storage systems will be distributed through selected sales partners and partner companies including the energy service provider Energie Baden-Württemberg, the solar technology specialist SMA, and wholesale traders.
“One thing is clear: since last year’s entry into the new business, the interest for our storage solutions has grown continuously,” a spokesman for Daimler told BBB.
Daimler will focus sales on Germany, with the spokesman saying the company would then gradually expand the business internationally together with its cooperation and distribution partners,both in terms of private and industrial applications.
“By combining renewable energy sources with a local battery storage unit, private households can increase their self-consumption of generated energy to as much as 6%, thereby bringing about their own ‘private energy revolution,'” said Harald Kröger, Head of Development Electrics/ Electronics and E-Drive Mercedes-Benz Cars.
Daimler AG entered the stationary battery storage business in 2015 with its subsidiary Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE.
Daimler is increasing its production capacities and investing around €500 million in the construction of a second battery factory at the Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE site in Kamenz.
The new facility is due to open in summer 2017.
