Engineering company Mortenson announced the completion of the Edwards & Sanborn solar and energy storage project in California. It said it is the largest solar plus energy storage project in the US.
Mortenson was the full engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor on both the solar and energy storage work.
The project uses LG Chem, Samsung and BYD batteries, it said. The project has 3.3GWh of energy storage, generates 875MWdc of solar energy and has a total interconnection power capacity of 1.3GW. The project supplies power to the city of San Jose, Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and the Clean Power Alliance, as well as the Starbucks coffee chain.
Some of the project is situated on the Edwards Air Force Base and was the largest public-private collaboration in US Department of Defense history, according to Mortenson.
Installations included:
- over 120,720 batteries
- 1.9+ million solar panels.
Brian Gorda, vice president of engineering at energy company Terra-Gen, said: “Now fully operational, this facility is a transformational project in the industry and is providing resiliency to the grid.”
