Lead-acid battery maker GS Yuasa has begun operations at its first lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility outside of Japan— although the company is ‘not allowed’ to release information on the type of cell.
GS Yuasa Hungary, a subsidiary of the Japan-based firm, announced it has started production of automotive 12V lithium-ion batteries at its plant in Miskolc, Hungary.
The 60,000㎡ plant will make 500,000 SLI batteries for the European market using cells produced in Japan during the first phase of expansion, with capacity planned to ‘significantly expand’ in coming years.
GS Yuasa is also planning to install a lithium-ion cell manufacturing process in the Hungary plant, but the company is once again staying tight lipped on details.
GS Yuasa Hungary was established in October 2017 in Hungary.
Earlier this month, BEST Battery Briefing reported how the company was redefining its brand by establishing a new corporate slogan, “Creating the Future of Energy“, to signal its move into the lithium-ion market.
