Chinese lithium and nickel-metal hydride battery developer Highpower International has received final product approval for its 20Ah lithium-ion battery.
The high-density battery is designed for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). Highpower International aims to supply the battery to the bus transportation industry.
The product approval, issued by China’s National Quality Control & Inspection Center for Buses, is based on tests according to the country’s automobile industry standard.
“China has begun to emerge as a leading green transportation adopter. China will become the largest market for electric buses within the decade,” said Highpower International chief technology officer Wenliang Li and added: “We dedicate meaningful resources to developing the new generation lithium batteries to address the immense EV market in China.”
The Shenzhen-based company secured a deal for the supply of 16Ah and 20Ah lithium-ion batteries to Huizhou Yipeng Energy Technology for use in buses earlier this year.
Highpower International exports its products to the US, European, Chinese and Southeast Asian markets.
The company recently received $622,200 in funding from the Shenzhen government to develop PV and off-grid energy storage systems.
