The India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) has launched the India Reuse and Recycling Council (IRRC) to promote battery recycling and second-life solutions.
IESA director Debi Prasad said it will focus on domestic technological development, policy formulation and worldwide alliances, which will help India become a global leader in sustainable battery solutions.
Prasad will lead the IRRC, and will engage with battery material suppliers, logistics companies, metal refiners and recyclers. Work will cover market assessments and developing technology through R&D. Global partnerships will help build efficient battery collection and recycling, as well as second-life applications, it said.
The body, which has members such as Exigo Recycling, Lico Materials, Ace Green Recycling and Rubamin, will also engage with the Indian government. Analysts said India has the potential to become a global hub for battery-grade material.
Investments, innovation and regulatory frameworks like the Battery Waste Management Rules 2022 will facilitate this, they believe.
