The Bulgaria-based energy technology International Power Supply (IPS) has started construction of its second battery energy storage system (BESS) production facility in Bulgaria.
The BESS factory, which will be located on the Hemus high-tech industrial park in Sofia, is said to expand the firm’s annual BESS production capacity to 4000MWh.
It will use automated production of battery modules and packs, with in-house production of battery management systems (BMS), liquid cooling systems and inverters.
The firm, which has four decades of experience in manufacturing power conversion technologies and turn-key energy storage solutions, also said the facility will have an R&D centre for new battery materials and power electronics.
This comes after the company’s newest BESS system under the brand name Exeron was shown at the ees Europe 2025 conference.
It is a modular housing BESS system said to scale from 1MWh to 8.1MWh in a 20ft container that is compatible with a range of chemistries, including but not limited to lithium-ferro-phosphate and nickel-manganese-cobalt.
The company said it also has an existing BESS production facility on the site that is undergoing certification with the European Commission as a strategic manufacturing project under the Net-Zero Industry Act.
Nikolay Mitov, head of business development, energy transition, IPS, said: “The new production facility will allow us to respond to the increased demand of clients looking for turnkey utility-scale BESS systems that are completely manufactured in Europe, meeting the critical aspect of cyber security and preventing potential geopolitical and logistics issues.”
