A lithium-ion battery recycling plant will be built in New York State after Li-Cycle Corporation gained financial backing for the $23 million facility in exchange for jobs.
The Canadian firm aims to tap into the US’ lithium-ion battery supply chain when the facility becomes fully operational in Monroe County later this year.
Based at Eastman Business Park (EBP) it will be the start-up’s first facility in the country.
Empire State Development (ESD) announced last month it would assist Li-Cycle with up to $450,000 through the Excelsior Jobs Program in exchange for job creation commitments.
Li-Cycle will initially occupy 57,000 square feet of a pre-existing process building before adding additional phases for the project.
Ajay Kochhar, CEO and co-founder of Li-Cycle, said: “As the US and world enter an unprecedented phase of growth for electric vehicles and electro-mobility, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and the critical materials within them are crucial for the industry’s success.
“The facility will foster the development of closed loop lithium-ion battery resource recovery in the state of New York and the broader US market.”
The project boosts the EBP’s energy storage credentials. Other projects include DNV-GL’s BEST Test and Commercialization Center, the Kodak Cell Assembly Center and hydrogen fuel cell firm Plug Power, lithium-ion company Nohms Technologies and supercapacitor electrode firm Graphenix Development.
Last month, Li-Cycle completed its first shipment of commercial battery materials such as cobalt, nickel and lithium processed at its facility in Ontario.
