Indian battery recycler Lohum said it is to supply Anglo-Swiss commodity trading firm Glencore with 10,000 tonnes of chemicals from spent lithium batteries over five years. The $200 million deal includes cathodes, sulphates, carbonates and oxides of various extracted metals.
Lohum tweeted that the partnership aims to allow both companies to deepen their recycling expertise and boost a circular economy by supplying raw materials back into the battery supply chain.
Lohum CEO Rajat Vaema told the Times of India that extracting lithium carbonate through recycling uses fewer resources than conventional mining. “This major development will directly boost India’s battery industry and energy security, leading to large-scale value creation in employment, domestic ecosystem growth and import savings on LIB raw materials.”
Lohum will procure spent batteries and recycle them in India.
