Luxcara, a German asset manager specialising in clean energy, has acquired a 520MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Waltrop, Germany.
Set to be built on a former coal plant site, the project marks a major step in repurposing industrial land for renewable infrastructure. It is among the largest BESS projects in the country, with secured grid capacity and plans to operate under a tolling agreement.
Located near Dortmund in North Rhine-Westphalia – Germany’s most power-demanding state– the site offers direct access to the 380kV transmission grid, making it ideal for enhancing grid stability and supporting renewable integration across central Europe.
The facility, expected to deliver 1,040MWh of energy storage, will begin construction in 2026. It forms part of the Waltrop Battery Park, which will total 900MW and 1,800MWh upon completion, making it one of Germany’s largest.
Luxcara is developing the project in partnership with Swiss energy firm BKW and German utility cooperative Trianel. The project is currently under review by the Federal Cartel Office.
Alexander Lüntzel, Investment Manager at Luxcara, said, “With this BESS project, we are not only expanding our clean infrastructure portfolio, but placing it exactly where grid flexibility is needed most. Moreover, repurposing a brownfield site formerly designed to develop a coal-fired power plant stands as a clear symbol of Luxcara’s continued commitment to driving the energy transition.”
