A number of lead-acid batteries will be replaced with second-generation lithium-ion versions in US army vehicles after battery systems manufacturer Navitas won a $7.2 million contract.
The new Ultanium™ 6T batteries are compatible with existing military vehicle systems so that they can be dropped in and used for engine start and deep cycle applications.
Each 12V Ultanium battery has a capacity of 120 Ah, the 24V model 60 Ah. Both have a 60,000-cycle life and can operate at temperatures of -30-60°C.
Ultimately, one new 6T battery will be able to replace two of the old lead-acid batteries, says Navitas,
The firm has developed a prototype ‘alpha’ version Gen 2 lithium-ion cell that it will make into a manufacturable ‘beta’ version suitable for use in both legacy and new, advanced military vehicle systems.
Navitas says it is particularly focusing on optimising cell chemistry and mechanical design to increase service life and low temperature capability.
