Swedish battery maker Northvolt said it gained support from the German government to build a gigafactory in Heide, northern Germany.
The support is subject to the state aid approval by the European Commission, it said. The federal government intends to directly stimulate battery cell production in Germany to meet growing global competition.
Northvolt plans annual production of 60GWh. Local authotities have entered the next stage of the permitting process, it said.
Robert Habeck, Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, said: “We have been in negotiations with Northvolt for almost a year. Our trustful dialogue with the company and all relevant stakeholders has proven successful, and important next steps towards realisation of the project therefore can now be taken.”
The Germans said this is the country’s first response to the US Inflation Reduction Act, and taken within a short timeframe.
