Danish wind power firm Orsted is to build a 20MW battery storage project in the UK as it takes its “first steps” into commercial battery storage.
Orsted UK said the Carnegie Road lithium-ion project near Liverpool— expected to be operational by the end of this year— is its first venture into large-scale storage.
The BESS, to be supplied by NEC Energy Solutions, will help manage grid stability between peak and low power demand for the UK’s National Grid.
The Liverpool project was originally developed by Shaw Energi, which will now support Orsted in setting up the battery system.
Matthew Wright, MD of Orsted UK, said: “We’re investing billions of pounds in the UK’s energy infrastructure and this is another significant investment that puts the UK at the heart of the global energy transition.”
The grid connection agreement and permits for the project are already in place and construction is expected to start in May, Orsted said.
Earlier this year, Orsted said it was investing in the launch of a pilot lithium-ion energy storage facility in Taiwan.
The company is also expected to partner NEC Solutions in a 55MW storage project linked to a wind farm in the US state of Massachusetts.
