The Global Battery Alliance (GBA) of energy storage players launched the second wave of its battery passport pilot on 20 June.
It said the new pilot builds on a successful launch of what it claimed was the world’s first battery passport proof of concept in January 2023. It was led by Audi and Tesla and involved CATL, LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, Eurasian Resources Group and others.
The second pilot aims to enhance and accelerate the realisation of the vision of sustainable, circular and responsible battery value chains. It is significantly widening the 2023 proof of concept. It will now include the previously tested Greenhouse Gas rulebook to calculate the battery carbon footprint, human rights and child labour indices and the newly developed rulebooks on Forced Labour, Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, Biodiversity and Circular Design of batteries.
The new pilot includes 11 pilot consortia. They will be led by global battery manufacturers including CALB Group Co., CATL, Eve Energy, Farasis Energy, FinDreams Battery, LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI and Sunwoda. Together they represent over 80% of the global electric vehicle battery market share, said GBA.
Results are expected by the end of the year.
The GBA includes over 160 members across the battery value chain including public bodies, NGOs, trade unions and academia.
GBA executive director Inga Petersen said: “The launch of the world’s first battery passport proof of concept in January 2023 afforded us invaluable insights and learnings which we are actively applying in this next phase.”
