Korean battery separator maker SK ie technology is considering building a battery separator plant in Canada. Ontario and Quebec are under consideration, according to Canadian news site Electric Autonomy.
It said SK ie technology, a subsidiary of SK Innovation, initially filed documents about a separator plant in April 2023 with the federal government. It later said it was considering three locations: St. Clair township, the town of Ingersoll and the city of Welland.
Quebec lobby filings from November show SK is pursuing funding for a separator factory there, the report stated.
It went on to say that SK ie technology told it establishing a separator factory in North America is under internal consideration. A decision is due early in 2024. It has hired a Canadian lobbyist to gather information, which does not mean confirmation of market entry.
Electric Autonomy said Ontario’s minister of economic development, Victor Fedeli, told it over multiple conversations that securing a battery separator plant is a key goal for the province.
SK ie technology has been approached for comment.
