Copper foil supplier Solus Advanced Materials has started mass production at its second Hungary plant, the only one in Europe producing copper foil for EV batteries.
Annual production is 23,000 tons and is in addition to the 15,000 tons capacity of the first plant. It said in its third quarter earnings report on 23 October that it plans a third phase of the Hungary facility, and this will add 62,000 tons annual capacity.
It is also planning to establish itself in Canada. It secured an incentive worth ₩150 billion ($109 million) earlier this month from the government of Quebec. It plans to build a production plant with capacity of 25,000 tons starting in 2026 and a further 38,000 tons in a subsequent phase.
It expects EV demand to recover due to policies in Europe and the US, including:
- interest rate cut in the US
- EV policy changes (European CO2 emission regulations, US fuel efficiency regulations and re-emerging subsidies in some European countries).
It makes standard battery copper foil for EV batteries with a thickness of 4.5~8μm; high-elongation battery copper foil; and high-strength battery foil.
