South Korean battery makers and automotive companies are joining a battery swapping network.
An LG Energy Solution spokesperson told BEST an industry alliance for battery swapping networks (known as Batteries as a Service, or BaaS) is setting up a council. Hyundai Motors and LGES, plus other battery industry players including SK On and Samsung SDI, are also participating in the council, they said.
The alliance will reportedly have the support of the government and local industry associations Korea Automobile & Mobility Association (KAMA) and the Korea Battery Industry Association (KBIA).
The council will hold its first meeting next week in Seoul to discuss key issues, including EV battery performance and carbon emissions, according to reports. The BaaS network would allow EV owners to subscribe to a battery exchange programme allowing them to quickly exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones.
Battery swapping networks have already been established in China by EV makers such as Nio.
