Battery materials manufacturer to idle portions of its US lithium production

Battery materials firm Albemarle is due to idle portions of its lithium mine and production facility in the US due to short-term supply-demand imbalances and an excess stockpile of battery-grade lithium.

The North Carolina-headquartered firm’s Silver Peak lithium mine in Nevada and Kings Mountain lithium hydroxide production facility in North Carolina are due to partially close next month until the end of the year.

EcoGraf tests show recovery of high purity battery anode material from lithium-ion battery materials.

Australian firm EcoGraf has claimed its proprietary purification process has been successfully applied to recycling battery materials from ‘production scrap’ and ‘black mass’.

In testing undertaken in collaboration with potential customers, the firm’s proprietary purification process has returned results of 98.6-100% carbon from production scrap and 98-99.6% from black mass.

LFP tests indicate lithium-ion cells can be made from waste material and recycled batteries

Battery materials firm Lithium Australia has completed initial tests on its lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) battery cells made from waste material, including low-grade spodumene and spent lithium-ion batteries.

The Australian firm has said testing revealed the 2032 cells, with a lithium metal negative electrode, achieved capacities of up to 161mAh/g at a 0.1C discharge rate1.

Tests prove need for high purity alumina in making lithium-ion batteries last longer

Australian battery materials firm Altech Chemicals has released test results that show high purity (99.99%) 4N alumina prevents sodium leaching when used on a lithium-ion battery separator.

Test work by Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) showed high purity alumina (HPA) could prevent battery failure modes including thermal runaway, lithium plating on the anode and life cycle reduction.

Hydro and Northvolt launch joint venture to enable EV battery recycling in Norway

Norwegian firm Hydro and Swedish company Northvolt have established a 50/50 joint venture to enable recycling of battery materials and aluminum from used electric vehicle battery packs. 

Through Hydro Volt AS, the companies plan to build a battery recycling plant in Fredrikstad, Norway, with production expected to start next year.

Coronavirus highlights US’ reliance on China for key lithium-ion battery materials supply

The US is too reliant on a battery materials supply from outside the country especially China, the CEO of battery minerals firm American Battery Metals Corporation (AMBC) has said.

Doug Cole’s comments came as the big three lithium companies telegraphed profit warnings due to coronavirus-driven logistics issues in the supply chain.

Anode material opens path to fast charging lithium-ion batteries

US scientists could provide insights into battery materials that allow the rapid charging of electric vehicles after making observations on how ions move in lithium titanate electrode material.

A team led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory captured, in real time, how lithium ions move in the material (made of lithium, titanium, and oxygen).

Firm reports purity of its recovered lithium-ion battery materials reaches almost 100%

Critical metals company American Manganese has announced the battery materials it recovered from disassembled electric vehicle battery packs was almost 100% pure.

The Company’s independent contract laboratory, Kemetco Research, generated recycled products with purities of 98.91% (nickel), 99.72% (cobalt) and 99.27% (manganese).

Cabot to tighten grip on battery materials market with buy out of carbon nanotube maker SUSN

Battery materials firm Cabot Corporation entered into an agreement to buy carbon nanotube (CNT) producer Shenzhen Sanshun Nano New Materials (SUSN) on 6 January

The Massachusetts, US, firm aims to buy SUSN through its wholly owned subsidiary Cabot China for around $115 million in enterprise value, which includes liabilities and contingent payments.

Nano One patent could lead to cobalt-free lithium-ion battery

Battery materials firm Nano One has secured a patent that stabilises lithium nickel manganese oxide (LMNO) chemistry and which could pave the way for a cobalt-free lithium-ion battery.

The Canadian company was issued Taiwanese patent number I672852 relating to LNMO cathode material, also known as high voltage spinel (HVS).
