‘Power-hungry’ UK islands plug in to Moixa battery storage project

UK-based residential energy storage firm Moixa has begun installing on an archipelago off the Cornish coast in southwest England as part of a £10.8 million (US$14.1m) ‘smart energy’ project.

Hitachi Europe is leading the project, which Moixa said will be “a global test-bed”, electric vehicles and heating systems on islands that have no gas supply and rely heavily on imported fossil fuels and electricity.

Battery projects lined up to replace gas in California

Energy regulators in California are being asked to approve installation of four battery storage facilities to replace reliance on gas peaker plants for grid reliability.

The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is asking the California Public Utilities Commission to approve installation of four lithium-ion units— with a combined BESS capacity of more than 560 megawatts— to replace local gas generation plants in the South Bay area.

Enel partnership to build battery storage in Germany

Plans to build a 22MW lithium-ion battery storage plant online in Germany in April have been announced by the renewables subsidiary of Italian energy giant Enel.

Enel Green Power (EGP) has signed a contract with German wind developer Enertrag and Swiss battery maker Leclanché to build and operate the lithium-ion battery in Cremzow.

BESS booster for Los Angeles utility

Doosan GridTech is building a 20MW lithium-ion battery storage system in the Mojave Desert for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).

Doosan has been awarded the contract for the $19.2 million project at the utility’s Beacon Solar Plant (pictured). The batteries are set to manage 600MW of solar power and 135MW of wind power generated by LADWP’s utility-scale renewable projects.
