US battery recycler Redwood Materials has acquired Redux Recycling, which it regards as the European Union’s leading lithium-ion battery recycler. It positions Redwood as a key player on the European market, it said.
“This acquisition will provide us with a well-established EU presence to quickly expand operations, increase capacity for battery recycling, and work closely with already-established suppliers, customers and industry partners across Europe,” it said.
Redux is located in Bremerhaven on Germany’s northern coast. It can handle and recycle 10,000 tonnes of different kinds of lithium-ion batteries and chemistries. These include electric vehicle (EV) and e-bike batteries, stationary storage systems and consumer devices like mobile phones, laptops and power drills.
The facility is close to Bremerhaven Port, one of the largest ports in Germany. This allows Redwood the ability to transport, recycle and refine EV packs and batteries from across Europe.
Redux is joined by a team of about 70 experienced technical staff, including chemical engineers, metallurgists and material scientists. It said their expertise in mechanical separation allows it to recover high purity metal concentrate, a critical input for battery materials production.
Redwood’s technology includes advanced material recovery processes such as hydrometallurgy, which complement Redux’s pre-treatment and mechanical separation capabilities.
Redux claims its technology enables it to extract cobalt, lithium, nickel and manganese from batteries with a recovery rate greater than 95%.
