Volkswagen’s UK subsidiary has signed an agreement with Ecobat for collecting and recycling EV batteries.
Ecobat’s relationship with automaker VW in the UK goes back to 2014 when it started collecting lead-acid batteries. The contract was expanded in 2019, when Ecobat started working with high-voltage batteries, and since the company’s UK diagnostics and disassembly centre in Darlaston in the West Midlands opened, it has processed and upgraded many thousands of batteries there.
The new agreement entails Ecobat collecting EV batteries to recycle the lithium-ion materials. It will collect high-voltage batteries from dealers, distributors and end-of-life recycling centres.
Ecobat’s new UK lithium-ion recycling centre is its third lithium-ion recycling facility (in addition to Germany and Arizona).
Elliott Ethridge, vice president of global sales for Ecobat, said it has been recycling lead batteries for VW in the UK for a decade and is delighted to now be recycling EV lithium-ion batteries.
Ecobat offers compliant battery transportation, storage, diagnosis and dismantling.
