First lithium EV packs produced at expanded UK plant

The first lithium-ion electric vehicle battery packs began rolling off the production lines of UK battery system maker Hyperdrive Innovation’s expanded facility on 11 July.

Dubbed HYVE, the Sunderland-based facility will make 30,000 packs— the equivalent of 173MWh— a year incorporating modules from Envision AESC, the firm’s patented battery management system and licenced IP from Taiwan and India manufacturers.

In-depth report exposes lithium-ion fake news

A damning critique of some of the half-truths the lithium-ion battery industry has disseminated in technical media and online is presented in the summer’s issue of Batteries and Energy Storage Technology Magazine.

Written by Dr Mike McDonagh, the publication’s technical editor, the article, entitled True Li-es, pours cold water on some of the general claims made by the industry that have made it the chemistry of choice for large-scale energy storage projects— vital for the widespread introduction of renewables.

Lead batteries key to meeting emissions targets

Wed, 09/14/2016 - 07:39 -- Paul Crompton

Lithium-ion might be the chemistry of choice for energy storage systems, but advances in the lead-acid means it could be a better fit to help meet emissions targets.

At this year’s biennial European Lead Battery Conference (ELBC) the world’s foremost lead battery pioneers will show how the latest research and development can reduce the global carbon footprint.
