BASF-Nornickel in talks on raw material supplies for battery production

Russian mining company Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel) has started exclusive negotiations with German chemicals firm BASF to cooperate in the supply of raw materials for future lithium-ion battery production in Europe.

Under the terms of a memorandum of understanding signed by the firms, which was announced on 27 June, BASF intends to invest up to €400 million ($456.6 million) “in a first step” to supply European battery cell producers for electric vehicles with regionally-manufactured cathode materials.

Largest BESS in Europe

Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation is working with Dutch energy firm Eneco on a 50MW energy storage project in Germany. NEC Energy Solutions will become the lithium-ion battery system supplier to the project.

Mitsubishi says it will be the largest BESS in Europe.

Chinese battery maker muscles into European EV market

Lithium battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) has bought a large stake in a Finnish firm as it looks to move into the European electric vehicle market.

The Ningde, China-based battery maker bought a 22% stake in the auto supplier for an undisclosed fee, reported newswire Reuters.

Is a European petrol and diesel powered vehicle ban in sight?

European ban on fossil-fuel powered vehicles has gained further momentum after Germany’s Bundesrat voted to ban petrol and diesel powered vehicles by 2030.

Although not binding, the resolution passed by the Bundesrat (the federal council of all 16 German states) calls on the European Commission to evaluate how member states are promoting zero emission vehicles.

Daimler adds to its battery capability

Daimler has started construction of its second battery factory in Kamenz with an investment of €500million ($547.3million) and it is claimed to be one of the largest in Europe.

The new production facility is planned to start operations in the middle of 2018. The area of about 20 hectares is located in immediate proximity of the existing battery factory in Kamenz, about 50 kilometers from Dresden.

European cartel fined for decade of lead battery price fixing

A lead battery ‘cartel’ has been fined almost €4million ($4.5million) for price fixing during a ten year period in Belgium.

The six firms admitted their part in the cartel following the Investigation and Prosecution Service of the Belgian Competition Authority inquiry.

Younicos Li-ion BESS to give German grid black start back-up

Europe’s first commercial battery park will provide regional grid black-start back-up, the first time a stationary battery storage system has been able to do so in Germany. 

In 2014, German energy storage systems developer Younicos installed the 5MW lithium-ion battery plant at Schwerin-Lankow for energy and natural gas utility WEMAG.

Custom lithium battery pack design and manufacturing firm Steatite Limited, has signed a European distribution agreement with large format lithium-ion manufacturer Beckett Energy Systems (BES).

UK firm Steatite will now provide BES’s 24Vdc lithium-ion battery pack module, for energy storage and remote power applications in Marine and Defence Markets.

Skeleton Technologies launches 4500 farad ultracapacitor series

European firm Skeleton Technologies’ is closer to reaching it 20Wh/kg goal with the launch of an ultracapacitor range utilising graphene to boost energy density.

The patented graphene material boosts the capacitance of the SkelCap 4500 series to 4500 farads.

The series has been designed for mass-market applications and meets the industry standard of a 60 mm diameter cylindrical cell.
