Daimler takes NorthStar partnership to next level

Tue, 04/09/2019 - 09:35 -- Hugh Finzel

Swedish-American battery manufacturer NorthStar has agreed a deal to supply Daimler with wireless battery monitoring systems for the Pure Lead AGM batteries it supplies to the auto giant.

Germany’s Daimler— parent company of Mercedes-Benz, and the largest truck manufacturer in the world— will install a tailored version of NorthStar’s ACE battery monitoring systems (named AGM Truck Test) at all of its service centres in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

NorthStar’s ACE wireless battery monitoring systems was launched for the telecom segment in 2017, and subsequently for the transportation segment in 2018. The AGM Truck Test tracks the battery’s performance throughout its service life, and ensures batteries are only replaced when they reach the end of their reliable life.

NorthStar gets an ACE in the hole

NorthStar has won the Sally Miksiewicz Innovation award for its Advanced Connected Energy (ACE) product, which enables customers to assess the state of health of VRLA batteries before they are installed and to monitor them post installation.

The technology, which was featured in an article in the winter issue of BEST magazine (go to page 47), utilises Bluetooth technology and a smartphone app, is the second to be honoured by the award which was established following the tragic death of Sally, the former CEO and Vice chairman of East Penn manufacturing in 2014.

First there were valve regulated lead-acid batteries. Then there was premature failure and then there was Dr David Feder. If you remember any of this, you’re a pro!

The rest, as they say was history but with an explosion in the growth of cellular telecom and data centres something had to be done about premature failure in lead-acid batteries.
