New Li battery plant for southeast China

Plans to build a “new energy” lithium battery industrial park with a total investment of CNY1.55 billion ($243.7 million) have been unveiled by the Liancheng County government in China’s Fujian Province.

The southeastern county said it will co-invest with other companies to spend a total of CNY920m on manufacturing two different types of lithium batteries— including producing 100 million 18600 lithium-ion cells for energy storage and vehicles each year— plus 20 million “soft pouch lithium batteries”.

Redflow to scale up battery making with cash raise

Australian flow battery maker Redflow is raising AUD18.1 million ($13.6m) to “scale up battery production and grow Australian and international sales”.

The Brisbane-based company said on 26 April it was raising the funds through a combination of a placement to new investors and a fully underwritten rights issue offered to all current shareholders.

Century Yuasa ‘plans lead line expansion’

Australia-based battery manufacturer Century Yuasa reportedly plans a multi-million dollar investment to expand its production of lead-acid battery plates.

Century Yuasa’s general manager of operations, Matthieu Anquetil, told Australia’s Courier Mailthe company will invest AUD6m ($4.6m) in a new line at the company’s Carole Park factory in Brisbane.

New Delhi plans ‘India first’ policy to protect battery industry

India’s government is planning a policy shake-up to “incentivise” battery manufacturing in the country, the country’s minister of state for power and new & renewable energy has told industry leaders. 

Raj Kumar Singh (pictured) told a meeting of Indian electric vehicle and battery manufacturing chiefs he could introduce “Make in India” legislation— to ensure only batteries produced in the country are used for government contracts related to the expanding EVs and energy storage market.

Austrian lead-acid veteran Banner is marking 80 years in the business with plans to expand its workforce and production capacity.

The company said it has already invested more than EUR50 million ($60.6m) in its Leonding manufacturing plant over the past six years— and has committed a further EUR15m to expand production capacity.

Umicore starts work on China materials plant

Belgium-based Umicore has broken ground in China for a new battery materials plant as part of a EUR360 million ($434m) expansion programme.

Umicore said the new plant in in Jiangmen, Guangdong Province, would produce NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) cathode materials for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to meet increasing demand for the electric vehicle market.

US lead-acid battery recycling start-up Aqua Metals is facing a probe into “possible securities fraud violations” as it launches a “retrofit” of equipment to tackle new production problems.

The blows come just weeks after the firm, which is seeking to commercialise a water-based recycling process, posted further losses and said it was “significantly behind schedule” with production plans.

Panasonic plans Japan batteries expansion

Japanese tech giant Panasonic Corporation is stepping up domestic production of prismatic lithium-ion batteries to meet what it said is increasing demand for electric vehicles.

Panasonic confirmed it will open a production line for the batteries at a factory in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, although it declined to give details about planned production capacity.

New plants and partner for AKASOL

German battery manufacturer AKASOL is partnering with Norwegian company ZEM to develop lithium-ion batteries for maritime use, one month after its announcement of a large-scale expansion of its production capacities.

The first joint product, AKAZEM 15 OEM, is a self-contained modular battery unit designed for workboats, fishing boats and small passenger ferries.

Battery production in China is picking up again after a sluggish start to 2017. 

Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) reports some Chinese battery producers are increasing their production levels by 10-20% as demand turns positive again.
