Trade body Battery Council International (BCI) has announced the three recipients of its 2024 Distinguished Service Award.
BCI said it is its highest individual honour and is given to people who have made long-term and meaningful contributions to the industry and association.
The winners are:
- Roger Winslow, former CEO of Voltmaster
- Bob Flicker, former COO at East Penn Manufacturing
- Hal Hawk, current CEO of Crown Battery.
BCI’s President and Executive Director Roger Miksad said: “There are many amazing leaders who work in the energy storage industry, and Roger Winslow, Bob Flicker and Hal Hawk are definitely the cream of the crop.”
They will get their awards formally at BCI’s US convention and expo, to be held from 21–24 April in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Winslow joined Voltmaster in 1957 and acquired the business in 1972. BCI said he was a driving force behind the evolution of BCI as it moved more aggressively into public policy, standard-setting and other pressing issues. He was president of BCI from 1986–1988.
Flicker joined East Penn as an engineering technician in 1972, eventually being appointed COO in 2014 until he retired in 2022 after 50 years at the company. He was given the task by the BCI board to chair the Data Book Committee and help standardise the many battery types starting to proliferate.
“Worldwide acceptance of the BCI group numbering system could not have happened without Bob Flicker and his decade-long chairmanship of the Data Book Committee,” the association said.
Hawk is president of Crown Battery and has been a part of the company for over 40 years. He has served on the BCI board since 1999 and is currently its longest-serving member. He was president of BCI from 2006–08 and is active on many other BCI committees.
