The Chinese government is to close down 39 lead-acid battery makers that are on the list of China’s 2014 Inefficient Capacity Elimination Plan.
The plan, recently released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), seeks to eliminate 356,000 tonnes of lead, 8.48m kVAh of lead-acid battery polar plates and 5.31m kVAh of lead-acid battery assembling.
Shanghai Metal Market (SMM) said most lead-acid producers on the MIIT list have already closed. A company in Zhejiang told SMM that they shut down more than a year ago and are doing other businesses. Another company from Jiangsu has moved to Shandong where regulation is less strict. A Jiangxi plant said that it already retired 200.000kVAh capacity in the MIT list in 2013.
The MIIT plan lists outdated capacities in 15 different industries. The number of zinc capacity required to shut down this year is lower than last year. The inefficient capacity of the aluminum industry has doubled this year. The copper industry’s outdated capacity has increased from 2013 and comprises 725,600 tonnes.
