Bulgarian lead-acid battery manufacturer Monbat has signed a licensing rights agreement with US bipolar battery tech company Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC).

Monbat has acquired rights to the “full suite” of GreenSeal bipolar lead battery technologies, ABC said.

CEO and chairman of Monbat Atanas Bobokov said his company had “seen the competitive advantages GreenSeal offers lead battery manufacturers… and envisaged many potential applications” for the technology.

An ABC spokesperson told BEST Battery Briefing Monbat had yet to say where it would produce the bipolar tech batteries.

Monbat is only one of the potential European firms that will market GreenSeal, the spokesperson said. “We are working with other European firms, but we cannot disclose who they are at this point.”

ABC founder and CEO Dr Ed Shaffer (pictured) said: “Monbat’s commitment is very exciting and their plans for GreenSeal technology rollout to their products and markets is very aggressive.”

According to ABC, GreenSeal “drastically simplifies lead battery manufacturing and significantly improves lead battery performance by increasing cycle life, lowering weight, reducing recharge time, improving reliability and is fully recyclable”.

ABC already has licensing agreements with four other companies— Johnson Controls, Exide Industries, Enersys and Trojan.
