Japanese battery technology company Envision AESC, announced an $810 million investment to build a Gigafactory in Florence, South Carolina.
The 30GWh plant will create 1,170 skilled jobs in the region in its first phase, producing high performance battery cells to power the next generation of BMW Group’s electric vehicles (EVs).
The company said the plant marks the next step in a multi-year partnership with the BMW Group.
This 1.5 million square feet plant is in addition to an existing battery manufacturing plant in Tennessee and a plant under construction in Kentucky. It takes AESC plant capacity to more than 70GWh in the US.
In October, BEST reported that Envision was going to invest in the battery cell plant for BMW. This announcement adds detail on location, investment size and jobs.
BMW has also previously announced a $700m battery assembly facility in Woodruff, South Carolina.
