Battery chemical manufacturer Hammond Group continues its tradition of appointing CEOs from outside the battery industry. Bobby Lucas takes over from Terry Murphy on 3 June and brings his experience as a lawyer. He has been on the Hammond board for 15 years and assisted with M&A deals.
Murphy, who steps down as president and CEO, may be retiring but has plans for new activities. His background is in engine propulsion, including working on the Space Shuttle and the Mars Rover.
Lucas told BEST that Murphy floated the idea of retirement some three years ago. “I put my hat in the ring, and here we are,” he said.
Murphy told BEST he has several plans up his sleeve for future projects, including work on critical minerals. Details are staying close to his chest for now, but he said he intends to remain on the Hammond board, even if his phone is at times disconnected.
“Bobby Lucas has been a trusted advisor to the Hammond Group for many years. He led our divestiture of the Halstab division, guided us through our transformation to an ESOP (employee stock ownership plan), and has been instrumental in our strategy as a trusted member of our board of directors,” said Murphy. Lucas most recently served as managing partner at Dinsmore & Shohl’s Chicago office.
