The Indian government has approved a ‘National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage’ that aims to transform mobility in India.
The move will see the introduction of a “sustainable mobility ecosystem” and push ahead with the government’s ‘Make in India‘ programme to boost domestic manufacturing”.
Under the initiative— approved by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s (pictured) cabinet— two phased manufacturing programmes (PMPs) will be established and will be valid for five years, up until 2024.
The first PMP will “support setting up of a few large-scale, export-competitive integrated batteries and cell-manufacturing Giga plants in India.” The second PMP will “localise production across the entire electric vehicles (EVs) value chain.
According to the government, there will also be a “phased roadmap” to implement battery manufacturing in India. The roadmap will initially focus on establishing “large-scale module and pack assembly plants by 2019-20”, and subsequent “integrated cell manufacturing by 2021-22”.
Ministers say the initiatives will work to help improve urban air quality in India, as well as reducing the country’s oil import dependency.
This announcement comes just days after Urja Global signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a combined EV and lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in the sate of Andhra Pradesh.
