Johnson Controls has acquired a 90% share of Colombian battery supplier MAC. JCI has been working with MAC since 2011 when they began a joint venture to produce and sell lead-acid batteries for the Central and South American markets.
Details of the financial terms have not been disclosed but the deal is expected to further strengthen JCI’s position in the continent.
As part of the former joint venture both companies have expanded their footprints in the region via exports from Colombia.
Johnson Controls’ Vice President for Latin America, Jorge Guillen said the company is committed to growth in this market. “We will be able to leverage our Brazilian and Mexican operations which will further allow us to capitalise on this investment and continuously improve the products and services we provide to our customers in this region,” he added.
As part of the acquisition, MAC will continue to manufacture batteries and its recycling facility at Yumbo, Colombia will remain operational as a key part of the lead supply chain in the region. MAC is the most recognised automotive battery brand in Colombia, as well as having a strong presence across the Caribbean, Central and South America.
