Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation is working with Dutch energy firm Eneco on a 50MW energy storage project in Germany. NEC Energy Solutions will become the lithium-ion battery system supplier to the project.
Mitsubishi says it will be the largest BESS in Europe.
Located in Jardelund, Germany, the project should be completed at the end of this year and will provide capacity reserve and balancing the services to renewables, mainly in Germany and neighbouring countries.
NEC Energy Solutions will supply and integrate the Enspire ME battery system, which includes 48MW / 50MWh lithium-ion batteries, power conversion technology and controls.
A source added the project would also pilot measures to restrict the curtailment of wind energy. Local wind farms will be connected to Enspire ME and, in the event of overcapacity or congestion on the grid, the farms’ generated power will be used to charge the batteries.
Mitsubishi and Eneco will seek to promote this new system to boost the value of their jointly-run offshore wind projects in Europe.
Mitsubishi said it has been strengthening its involvement in the development of businesses that have high environmental value as part of its moves to support low-carbon activities. The company said it is committed to developing businesses such as BESS that encourage greater use of renewable energy.
