LG Energy Solution, a subsidiary of LG Chem, has obtained lithium-ion battery cathode intellectual property under license from US firm CamX.
The licensing deal relates to CamX’s GEMX® platform, which enables the use of less cobalt in the manufacturing of LNO, NMC and NCA chemistries.
Dr. Kenan Sahin, founder/president of CamX, said: “Instead of attempting production ourselves, by working with eminent and established companies like LGES, we can see our inventions rapidly and more broadly come to market.”
The GEMX inventions are based on inventions for which patents have been granted globally including the US, EU, Korea, Japan and China.
In July 2020, Samsung SDI licensed low cobalt technology from CamX Power.
The non-exclusive license covered the GEMX platform.
As far back as 2016, BEST was reporting how German chemical company BASF had signed a licensing deal with CamX to use the intellectual property relating to the latter’s suite of patented CAM-7 cathode materials.
