US company Enviroguard, which makes battery spill containment and other safety products, said it launched new chemical spill containment pillow technology for industrial battery environments.
The pillow is designed for batteries with vented lead acid (VLA), valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) and vented NiCad batteries.
Data centres, telecommunications facilities and utilities use batteries that contain sulphuric acid or potassium hydroxide. A leak of these chemicals can result in environmental spills and fires, it noted.
The company’s new neutralising absorption pillows have properties and technologies such as a dustless acid absorption compound called Neutrasorb, flame retardant fabric, increased fabric durability and pH reactive colour indication. This notifies end users when an electrolyte spill has occurred but does not react when in contact with water.
