Swedish battery maker Northvolt has been given the go-ahead to build its joint battery factory with Volvo Cars, a court has ruled.
Northvolt spokesperson Anders Thor said the environmental permit for the gigafactory in Gothenburg has been approved.
Northvolt and Volvo Cars will now move ahead and build their first joint battery factory in Gothenburg, Sweden, next to Volvo Cars’ assembly plant in Torslanda.
The factory is expected to be operational by 2025 and produce battery cells specifically developed for use in pure electric Volvo and Polestar cars. The plant will have a potential annual cell production capacity of 50 GWh.
It will be the first production facility for the joint venture, in which Volvo Cars and Northvolt are investing Skr30 billion ($2.9 billion).
