Nyobolt, UK maker of fast-charging batteries, is showcasing an electric vehicle (EV) with a new 35kWh battery that can charge fully and repeatedly in under six minutes, which it claims is a new record in automotive electrification.
It said the lithium-ion battery is smaller and lighter and offers driving a range of up to 250 km. It can use existing charging infrastructure.
The company claims charge rate is more than double the fastest charging cars on the road today. The 10C rating facilitates the six minute charge, the company said.
Nyobolt tested its batteries for over 2,000 fast charge cycles without significant performance loss, it said.
Its technology can also be applied to larger battery packs, such as those found in luxury EVs, trucks or buses. Such packs have not been made yet but could be charged in a few minutes once 1MW chargers become available, it said.
The battery is due to go into production in early 2024.
Nyobolt worked with renowned car designer Julian Thomson, who based his design on the Lotus Elise sports car. He teamed up with engineering company Callum to make an EV.
Sai Shivareddy, CEO of Nyobolt, said: “Previously, enabling a light weight fast-charging vehicle was not possible without compromising its lifetime and so people have been relying on costly and large battery packs in the vehicle. With our unique technology we have achieved a six-minute charge car, and developed smaller battery packs that can deliver more power and charge in less time.”
